Maqam Music Ensemble
Students from the Department of New Music
Seven original new works written by the course participants meet, intertwine, separate, and meet again. The works were composed and developed in the tradition of the Arab maqam and other elements from Eastern music traditions. The participants studied the maqam system, lingering and gradation in music, hetrophony, rhythm patterns from the Arabic music tradition and more.
In keeping with Eastern music traditions, the performance focuses on real-time music-making, highlighting elements like improvisation, spontaneity, predictable and unpredictable responses and more.
