Bliss

In 2001, Microsoft launched its new operating system, Windows XP. The default wallpaper of the operating system became one of the quintessential images of the 2010s. The idyllic green hills and blue sky of California’s Sonoma Valley, where photographer Charles O’Rear took the original photo, lure users to step into the digital realm, enter a world that is simultaneously familiar and unknown. As part of David Lockard’s course, first-year students from the Arts Department created a performative arcade with video games associated with this key image. Visitors to the festival are invited to enter the computerized lawn and digital sky, play, and discover the secret of bliss.
