Variations for Swing Assembly in 3rd Configuration 

A pendulum sways in the middle of the room. An entity that traverses the space. The floor below it is covered by speaker cable that form an archipelago – a tangle of reception islands. The work explores the relationships between mechanical movement, sound production, and the electromagnetic fields that are all around us.

Like the needle of a lost compass, the pendulum “scans” the room through oscillations that produce electromagnetic waves. These signals are picked up by the speaker wires that control synthesizers, and alter the sounds in the room. Recordings of human, nature, machine, and boat sounds are integrated into the work, adding dynamic layers that shift and transform over time.
